Opinion: B.C. doctors have been kept in the dark about Doctors of BC bylaw amendments

Doctors of BC members are being encouraged by the association’s leadership to vote in favour of proposed bylaw amendments to relinquish their democratic right to elect the board of directors. If passed, the new policies and governance structure would, in effect, disenfranchise the approximately 12,000 physician members as the owners of the sole representative association for the medical profession in B.C.
Most worrisome, the majority of doctors appear to be unaware of the profound implications and risks of the proposed changes that would impact physicians, patients and the health-care system. It’s little wonder that the vast majority of doctors, who are interested in practising medicine and not trained in matters of policy governance, would choose to ignore the governance referendum as irrelevant to their practice. They don’t know what they don’t know.
Do doctors need legislation to assist patients end of life?

Since the Supreme Court of Canada February 6, 2015 decision on physician assisted suicide the question on people's minds is, "Do physicians need legislation to help them with this ruling?"
The BC Civil Liberties Association ( BCCLA) was quick to allay any fears of a void occurring should new legislation not be enacted by Federal or Provincial Governments reminding that if no action is taken, physician-assisted dying will be regulated in the same manner as other health care matters.
Do we need public oversight to the conduct of Judges?

Before we reach a crisis with the Judiciary in Canada is it time for public oversight to the conduct of Judges?
Recently, we have seen the case in Alberta where justice has been delayed and could possibly be derailed because a Judge was not up to date with applicable laws.
We have also seen a case of inappropriate remarks by a Judge, on keeping legs together, raising questions as to him continuing as a Judge.
These are not isolated cases. The Canadian Judicial Council receives many complaints annually, 159 in 2014 and 173 in 2015, on the conduct of Judges from across the country. How do they deal with them?
Will the Federal Government introduce legislation to add public oversight to the Canadian Judicial Council and committee responsible for dealing with complaints on the conduct of Judges?

VMA and WMA hosting debate July 12 with President Elect candidates

The VMA website, http://vancouvermedicalassociation.ca/ has a notice of a Special Event on July 12, 2017 featuring the candidates for DoctorsOfBC President Elect, Dr Cadesky and Dr Mahy, with Dr Arun Garg as moderator.
The event will be held at the Seasons in the Park at Queen Elizabeth Park in Vancouver with pre-dinner cocktails at 17:30, dinner at 18:30 and the debate from 19:30 to 21:00.
The deadline to register for this event is Wednesday July 5th. I think this will be a very interesting event to attend.
With limited seats available I am happy to have mine confirmed and would encourage others interested in attending in person to get their reservations in as soon as possible to avoid disappointment or the risk of forgetting to register in time with the long weekend almost upon us followed by a short week that is bound to be busy as the deadline to register approaches.
The reason for keeping audio recordings

I would not be so quick to accept that the reason for keeping audio recordings was simply to assist the minuting of meetings, while it might be presented as the purpose, it does not take into account the history of the BC Medical Association, the Doctors of BC, and what gave rise to making and keeping audio recordings, not just for minutes, but as an archive.
As I understand, and hopefully those who lived through the times might help with any details and corrections.
Don't get swept away by the spin on health care

We better be careful not to get swept away by the spin of BC Liberals pre-election buzz.
And when it comes to the spin on health care they're not alone.
The same spin seems to be coming from the leaders of the medical association DoctorsOfBC. Is this the result of being co-managers of BC healthcare for almost a decade through the GPSC and other initiatives?
Is it any surprise they are all so complimenting of each other?
What are we to believe? That they have a plan? That it's going to work, someday, soon?
Yes, the plan to spend tax payer dollars is happening. Billions of dollars and hundreds of millions over budget. So where are the results?
Why did more than 70% not even bother to vote in 2016 Doctors of BC elections?

The results of the Doctors of BC election for the 2016/2017 Board and CMA positions were announced on May 16, 2016.
More than seventy percent of doctors in BC did not even bother to vote in the election for the next President-Elect.
Two other positions on the Executive and all but one position on the Board were filled by acclamation while 3 districts have no board delegates whatsoever.

Physicians, therefore, are both intellectually and morally obliged to act as advocates for the sick wherever their welfare is threatened and for their health at all times.
Today, this covenant of trust is significantly threatened.
